The GGFan Experience

Background information: I discovered the German circuit by stumbling upon the official Netbattle server of Pokemonexperte in June of 2006. While I found most of the Germans friendly in spite of the language barrier, a couple did not welcome me with open arms, namely peter pan, who was one of Smogon's overall best players at the time. He was especially proficient at GSC and RBY, so he wanted to beat me as his way of proving how much better Smogon players were. I was up for the challenge, however, and ignored his taunts. It was no coincidence that the first RBY tournament in Pokemonexperte's history was started shortly after I registered an account there. At this point, Pokemonexperte was the largest competitive Pokemon organization in the world with over 10,000 members and a tournament scene that easily dwarfed Smogon's. There were monthly tours in various tiers, a hall of fame, and an annual tournament of champions called the Meisterschaft in which only the highest ranked players of the aforementioned hall of fame could sign up for. Players earned points in the hall of fame by placing high in tournaments; the higher you placed, the more points you got.
Pokemonexperte's first RBY tour featured most of the site's heavy hitters at the time: me, peter pan, Watermaster, Raffael, Robo, Cerberus, maybe even Picollo. I made it into the finals without dropping a single game, taking down established stars Robo and Cerberus along the way. Peter pan also made it into the finals, which added some pressure. I didn't just want to win this tour to prove I was one of the best players in the game--no, I had to stick it to peter pan more than anything. It wouldn't be easy, however: he bested me in the first game of the best-of-three set, which was also my first loss in the tour. I won the second game to stay alive and force an exciting third encounter.

I was known for running my famous Jynx team at this time, so it was interesting to see that I ended up going with something different. Alakazam nearly pulled off the hax kill, but Jynx got the job done at the last second.

I wasted my great play by letting Golem go right after. In retrospect I should have sacrificed my frozen Chansey, then send out Snorlax. Well, if anything it forced him to send out Starmie instead of me not knowing what would come next, so I guess that helped.
An interesting thing to note here is that peter pan's Starmie had Surf, a move that is almost never seen today and was not terribly common even back in the mid 2000s.

Hyper Beam would have killed, but I guess peter pan wanted to play it safe. The lucky crit Body Slam on Starmie made him feel uneasy, which ultimately led to this. Maybe it would have been wiser to keep Snorlax out and attack Exeggutor instead of switching it out, and I also could have gone to my own Exeggutor, though it was also my own means of reliably paralyzing his Starmie (I assumed it had Surf/Thunder Wave/Thunderbolt/Recover).

I'd say this was a misplay on peter pan's part. Ice Beam/Thunderbolt was guaranteed to kill at this range (minimum damage is 88); he should have just attacked. Instead I got to ensure Golem had no chance of waking up, which is better than nothing, I guess.

Instead of paralyzing me, Chansey attacked, which leads me to believe it didn't have Thunder Wave. Thankfully, Hyper Beam didn't miss and I won the tense 3rd game with nothing left but a 5 HP Tauros and frozen Chansey to win the tournament.
Aftermath: I won the whole tournament, dropping just one game and beating three of the organization's best players back to back to back (Robo, Cerberus, and peter pan). I also earned peter pan's respect, and we ended up becoming friends as a result. In fact, we joined a multi-gen team tournament (RBY, GSC, ADV) a few months later and won the whole thing. Peter pan was the captain, but let me name the team, which I called "Sudden Impact." I went undefeated as the RBY player in that event, most notably defeating a young jira in the finals, who would go on to become one of the all-time greats of the German circuit.
