The GGFan Experience

Background information: I very well may have reached my peak as a multigen player in 2008, for this was the year I won the Triple Crown. In addition to winning the Hulk Hogan Cup (RBY w/trades) I almost managed to win the Lovelykiss Turnier (GSC OU), the Impergator Cup (RSE UU), and the Ralf-Aijimboo Cup (RBY OU). I made it into the finals of the Dramatic Cup (ADV OU), the semi finals of the Meatpoed Cup (RSE NU), and the semi finals of the RBY BL + ADV UU Contest (RBY BL and RSE UU) to pull off a rather incredible year by my standards. I was playing nearly every extent metagame and managed to make it into at least the top 4 of all of them except for GSC UU, in which I lost in the quarterfinals.
I chose the finals of the Hulk Hogan Cup because I didn't drop a single game going into my set against jira, who was a solid RBY player in his own right but mostly known for his ADV prowess. We played many, many times in many different tiers from 2006 to 2008, and this one might be our best set. I won the first game to go 11-0, but then I got extremely unlucky in the second game to finally lose, forcing this third game.

Rules: RBY OU with tradebacks allowed
Due to their access to the elemental punches in Tradebacks, I opted for both Alakazam and Gengar, and used Hypno over Chansey since it's borderline broken with Amnesia. Jira also thought outside the box a bit, not using Exeggutor and instead going with Slowbro, presumably as a means of dealing with Hypno.

I don't get this exchange at all: he goes to Chansey because he seems to want to protect Jynx from paralysis, but then goes to Snorlax. Maybe he thought I would go to my own Chansey. Unfortunately, I end up missing the Sleep Powder and don't get to take advantage of his mistake.

Yeah, really bad luck for jira; however, if Hypno went down as intended, I would have most likely killed it off with Tauros, and then I would have probably hit his Tauros with Hyper Beam before going on. From there, Exeggutor would have won the game barring a Hyper Beam crit from Tauros, so this wasn’t as dramatic as it seems.

Well, at first I thought this was a tremendously stupid play that had no reasoning behind it, but I actually think it shows how aware I was, at least. Had the Jynx avoided the Special drop and landed a Critical Hit with Blizzard or froze me, there’s no guarantee I would have been able to finish it off with Hypno (which means Jynx uses Lovely Kiss and game over). I weighed risk vs reward, and felt the risk of Exeggutor dying was too high. Of course, I still think using Explosion was bad because the odds were well in my favor. It’s interesting because I had started the game playing aggressively, but ended up going with this extremely conservative play. The odds of winning at this point weren’t great, but as long as I avoided paralysis I was OK.

And so I do indeed avoid the dreaded paraslam to barely win a very close game.
Aftermath: I won the tournament with an astonishing 12-1 record, which would be the first of four tournaments that I ended up winning on Pokefans in 2008. Two of other three were GSC and RSE, which earned me the Triple Crown. The Hulk Hogan Cup was the 5th RBY tournament that I had won in the German circuit, and I would go on to win two more (one in that same year, and the famous 4Chords Cup in 2013 during my comeback year). Overall, I won seven out of the ten RBY tournaments that I entered in the German circuit; of the three that I lost, I finished in 3rd place in two of them. Not a bad run at all.
